Jaca

Aragón, Spain

Why visit Jaca?

Jaca is a city in Aragon . More of a stopping point than a destination, Jaca sees its fair share of travellers headed for the Pyrenees - summer or winter. With a constant flow of tourists passing through, the town has more than its fair share of restaurants, cafes, and hotels, and it is a comfortable place for a halt in Northern Spain.

Jaca is an ancient fort on the Aragón River, situated at the crossing of two great early medieval routes, one from Pau to Zaragoza. Jaca was the city out of which the County and Kingdom of Aragon developed. It was the capital of Aragon until 1097 and also the capital of Jacetania.

Where to eat?

Jaca offers a range of dining options from traditional tapas bars to formal restaurants. Local specialities often feature fresh, seasonal ingredients. Look for the menú del día (set lunch menu) for the best value — typically €10–15 including starter, main, dessert, and drink. Many bars offer free tapas with drinks, especially in certain regions. Vegetarian and vegan options are increasingly available, though traditional Spanish cuisine is meat and seafood-heavy.

Where to drink?

Aragón has a growing wine scene, particularly from the Cariñena, Somontano, and Calatayud DO regions. The local reds from Garnacha grapes are especially noteworthy. The region also produces excellent olive oil. Try the local zurracapote (a sangría-like drink made with red wine and fruit). Tap water is safe to drink.
