Overview

For other places with the same name, see Andalusia (disambiguation) .

Covering a vast territory in southern Spain, Andalucía attracts millions of visitors annually with its sun-drenched beaches, historic Moorish cities, and flamenco culture. The region is easily accessible from major European cities and offers a wealth of experiences for every type of traveller.

When to Visit

The best time to visit Andalucía is spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November), when temperatures are pleasant and crowds are thinner. Summer (June–August) can be extremely hot, especially in Seville and Córdoba where temperatures often exceed 40°C. Winter (December–February) is mild along the coast though cooler inland. Major festivals include Semana Santa (March/April), the Feria de Abril in Seville, and the Feria de Agosto in Málaga.

Getting Around

Andalucía has an extensive transport network. The high-speed AVE train connects Seville, Málaga, and Córdoba with Madrid in under 2.5 hours. Regional trains (Media Distancia) connect smaller cities. Buses are the most economical option for reaching towns without rail service. The major motorways — A-4, A-7 (coastal), A-44, A-45, A-49, and A-92 — form a comprehensive road network. Car rental is recommended for exploring the white villages (pueblos blancos) and natural parks.

Cuisine

Andalucía is the birthplace of gazpacho and salmorejo — cold tomato soups perfect for hot summers. Fried fish (pescaíto frito) is a coastal staple, especially in Málaga and Cádiz. Jamón ibérico from Jabugo (Huelva) is world-renowned. Sherry (jerez) comes from the Jerez de la Frontera region. Tapas culture is deeply ingrained — many bars in Granada and Seville still offer a free tapa with each drink. Other must-try dishes include rabo de toro (oxtail stew), espinacas con garbanzos (spinach with chickpeas), and flamenquín (fried pork roll).

Culture & Festivals

Andalucía is the heartland of flamenco, with authentic tablaos in Seville, Jerez, and Granada's Sacromonte district. Semana Santa (Holy Week) is celebrated with spectacular processions throughout the region, particularly in Seville and Málaga. The Feria de Abril in Seville is a week-long fair with flamenco dresses, horse parades, and casetas (tents). The Feria de Agosto in Málaga and the Carnival of Cádiz are other major highlights. The region's Moorish heritage is visible everywhere — from the Alhambra to the Mezquita of Córdoba.

Travelling during a festival? We'll plan around the crowds.
