Mudug is a region in central Somalia, spanning from the Ethiopian border in the west to the Indian Ocean in the east. The landscape is predominantly semi-arid plains and acacia savannah, supporting a primarily pastoralist economy. The region occupies a strategic position between northern and southern Somalia.
The city of Galkayo, the regional capital, is one of Somalia's largest cities and serves as a major commercial hub. It famously straddles the boundary between the autonomous states of Puntland and Galmudug, with the northern half administered by Puntland and the southern half by Galmudug.
When is the best time to visit?
The dry season from December to March offers the easiest travel conditions. The Gu rains (April to June) and Dayr rains (October to November) can make roads impassable.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
Galkayo is a major transport hub connected by road to Mogadishu (south), Bosaso (northeast), and Garoowe (north). Roads are unpaved. Four-wheel-drive is essential. Galkayo Airport serves domestic flights.

What is the culture like?
Mudug is a crossroads of Somali clan territories. Traditional Somali poetry and oral culture thrive. The dual administration of Galkayo creates a unique urban character.
