Žalec is a town and municipality in the Savinja Valley of central Slovenia, best known as the heart of the country's hop-growing region. The municipality lies in a broad valley surrounded by low hills covered in hop fields, vineyards, and orchards, creating a distinctly agricultural landscape that has earned Žalec the nickname "the green heart of Slovenia."
Hop cultivation has been central to Žalec's identity since the 19th century, and the area produces much of Slovenia's export-quality hops, prized by breweries across Europe. The town of Žalec serves as the administrative and commercial centre of the upper Savinja Valley, with a pleasant historic core, a long main square, and the unique Institute of Hop Research and Brewing — a testament to the crop that defines the region.
For visitors, Žalec offers a fascinating look at Slovenian agricultural heritage combined with easy access to the natural attractions of the Savinja Valley. The town is also known for its thermal springs, the Greenspa Žalec thermal complex, and its proximity to the historic towns of Celje and Laško. The annual hop harvest season (August–September) brings the municipality to life with festivals and celebrations.
When is the best time to visit?
The ideal time to visit Žalec is during the hop harvest season from mid-August to September, when the valley is at its most vibrant and the annual Days of Hops and Beer festival takes place. Summer (June–August) is warm and pleasant, with temperatures averaging 22–28°C. Spring (April–May) is beautiful with blossoming orchards, while autumn offers golden hop fields and wine harvest activities. The Greenspa Žalec thermal complex operates year-round, making Žalec a viable winter destination as well.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Žalec's cuisine reflects its agricultural abundance. The region is famous for its hops, and many local dishes are paired with beer rather than wine. Specialities include hop-shoot soup (springtime delicacy), dishes cooked with local beer, and hearty Savinja Valley classics like jota and štruklji. The nearby wine hills produce excellent white wines. The town has several good gostilne and restaurants, with the brewery restaurant at the local hop institute offering unique beer-paired tasting menus.
What is the culture like?
Žalec's main cultural event is the Days of Hops and Beer (Dnevi hmelja in piva), held annually in late August or early September. This multi-day festival celebrates the hop harvest with beer tastings, concerts, culinary events, and cultural programmes. The Institute of Hop Research and Brewing offers tours explaining the history and science of hop cultivation. The town also hosts a summer cultural programme with concerts and theatre performances in its main square.
