Why visit?

Trbovlje is a municipality in central Slovenia, situated in the hilly region of the Sava Hills (Posavsko hribovje) along the Sava River. It is best known as the historic heart of Slovenia's coal-mining and industrial heritage — the Trbovlje coal mine, opened in 1804, drove the region's economy for over two centuries and shaped the identity of its communities. The landscape is characterised by forested hills, deep valleys, and the powerful industrial silhouette of the Trbovlje Thermal Power Plant, including one of the tallest chimneys in Europe (360 m).

In recent decades the municipality has been reinventing itself, preserving its mining legacy through museums and heritage trails while embracing the natural beauty of the surrounding countryside. The Sava River offers opportunities for fishing and riverside walks, and the hills above Trbovlje provide panoramic views over central Slovenia.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit Trbovlje is from late spring to early autumn (May to September), when the weather is warm and the surrounding hills are green and accessible for hiking. Autumn (October) brings colourful foliage to the forests, making it a pleasant season for photography and walking. Winters are cold and often foggy in the valley, though the hills may see snow suitable for short winter walks. The annual Miners' Day celebrations (early July) are a particularly good time to experience local culture.

How do you get around?

Trbovlje is accessible by car via the A1 motorway (Ljubljana–Maribor), with the exit at Ponikve leading directly into town. The journey from Ljubljana takes about 40 minutes. The town has a railway station on the Zidani Most–Šentilj line, with regular services to Ljubljana and Maribor. What should you eat?

The cuisine of the Trbovlje region reflects the hearty, filling food of Slovenia's industrial and mining communities. Staples include jota (bean and sauerkraut stew), krvavice (blood sausages), and roasted meats with potatoes. The surrounding forests yield mushrooms and game in season, and the Sava River provides freshwater fish. Local bakeries sell potica (rolled nut bread) and other traditional pastries. Dining options in Trbovlje are modest but honest, with a few family-run gostilnas serving home-style Slovenian cooking.

What is the culture like?

Trbovlje's cultural identity is deeply tied to its mining heritage. The Trbovlje Mining Museum (Muzej premogovništva) preserves the history of coal extraction through underground exhibits and restored machinery. The Miners' Day (Rudarski dan) in early July is the municipality's main festival, featuring parades, concerts, and commemorations. Trbovlje also has a lively alternative music scene; the town's cultural centre hosts concerts and events year-round.
