Why visit?

Tišina is a small, predominantly rural municipality in the Prekmurje region of northeastern Slovenia, situated in the flat Pannonian plain between Murska Sobota and the Mura River. With around 4,000 residents spread across a handful of villages — the largest of which is also called Tišina — the municipality is one of the quietest and least-visited in Slovenia, offering a glimpse into a landscape and culture that feels distinct from the rest of the country.

The terrain is almost entirely flat, consisting of fertile agricultural land interspersed with patches of riparian forest along the Mura River's tributaries and drainage channels. This is the Mura Plain (Muransko polje), a landscape of fields, orchards, and scattered farmsteads that has been shaped by centuries of farming and the ever-present influence of the river. The Mura floodplain, accessible from the municipality's northern edge, is one of the last ecologically intact lowland river systems in Central Europe.

What defines Tišina as a destination — if it can be called one — is the Prekmurje cultural identity itself. The region has its own dialect (prekmurščina), its own culinary traditions rooted in Hungarian and Central European influences, and a pace of life that is deliberately unhurried. The municipality's name, meaning "silence" in Slovenian, is apt: this is a place for travellers who want to step away from Slovenia's alpine and coastal attractions and experience the country's quieter, flatter, eastern face.

When is the best time to visit?

Late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October) are the most pleasant seasons. The flat terrain means temperatures are more continental than in western Slovenia — summers are warmer (28–34°C in July–August) and winters colder (frequent fog, temperatures occasionally dropping to -10°C or below). The agricultural landscape is at its greenest in May and June, with fields of sunflowers, maize, and orchard blossoms creating a patchwork of colour.

Summer can be hot and muggy, with afternoon thunderstorms common in July and August. Winter is grey and often fog-bound for days on end, as cold air pools in the low-lying terrain — this is one of the coldest parts of Slovenia. However, the area's thermal springs (at nearby Banovci and Moravci) make winter spa visits a viable option.

The Prekmurje region's festival calendar includes harvest celebrations, village feasts, and the broader cultural events of Murska Sobota. Tišina itself has limited specific events, but the surrounding area compensates — particularly in autumn when the harvest brings wine festivals and agricultural fairs.

How do you get around?

Tišina has no rail station; the nearest is in Murska Sobota, about 10 km to the west, on the main Ljubljana–Murska Sobota line (journey time from Ljubljana approximately 2.5 hours). Bus services connect Tišina to Murska Sobota and surrounding villages, but frequency is limited — a car is strongly recommended for getting around the municipality.

By car, the municipality is reached via the regional road from Murska Sobota toward the Mura River. Distances within the municipality are short — the villages are clustered within a 5–8 km radius — but public transport between them is sparse to non-existent. The nearest motorway access is the A5 (Murska Sobota–Lendava), connecting to Maribor and the broader Slovenian network.

Cycling is well-suited to the flat terrain, and the Prekmurje region has a developing network of cycling routes. E-bikes are available for rent in Murska Sobota and nearby spa towns. Walking between villages is easy on level ground, though roads may lack pavements in places.

Where should you go?

  • Tišina — the municipality's administrative centre and largest settlement, a quiet village with a parish church and the characteristic Prekmurje lowland setting, offering a base for exploring the surrounding agricultural landscape and Mura River floodplain

What should you eat?

Prekmurje cuisine is one of Slovenia's richest regional food traditions, shaped by Hungarian, Austrian, and Croatian influences. The signature dish is prekmurska gibanica — a multi-layered pastry filled with poppy seeds, walnuts, apples, and cottage cheese (tvaroh), recognised as a Slovenian protected geographical specialty. Bujta repa, a hearty stew of pickled turnip and pork, is another regional classic, traditionally prepared during winter pig-slaughtering season.

Other Prekmurje staples include langaš (deep-fried dough, similar to Hungarian lángos), bograč (a mixed-meat goulash named after the cooking pot), and various pork dishes reflecting the region's strong pig-farming tradition. Pumpkin-seed oil — Slovenia's liquid gold — is used liberally in salads and as a finishing drizzle on soups and stews.

In Tišina itself, dining options are limited to village gostilnas and agritourism farms serving home-cooked Prekmurje meals. The nearby spa towns of Banovci and Moravci have hotel restaurants, and Murska Sobota offers a wider range. Wine lovers should seek out the local Šipon (Furmint) and Renski Rizling (Rhine Riesling), the Prekmurje region's characteristic white varieties.

What is the culture like?

Tišina's cultural heritage is embedded in the broader Prekmurje identity — a region that has historically sat at the crossroads of Slovenian, Hungarian, and Croatian cultures, developing its own dialect, folk traditions, and culinary customs. The Prekmurje dialect (prekmurščina) was used as a literary language in the 18th and 19th centuries and remains a source of regional pride.

The parish church in Tišina and the smaller village churches throughout the municipality reflect the modest ecclesiastical architecture of the Prekmurje plain — simple, often Baroque-influenced buildings without the dramatic hilltop settings of western Slovenia. Folk architecture, including traditional thatched farmhouses and wooden granaries, has largely disappeared but survives in scattered examples.

Regional festivals in the Prekmurje area include autumn harvest celebrations, the Days of Prekmurje Cuisine (promoting traditional dishes), and various village patron-saint feasts through the summer months. The Murska Sobota Pomurje Museum provides broader context for the region's history and ethnography, though it lies outside Tišina's borders.
