Sveti Andraž v Slovenskih goricah (Saint Andrew in the Slovenian Hills) is a small municipality in northeastern Slovenia, situated in the heart of the Slovenske Gorice wine region. Covering approximately 17 km², it is one of Slovenia's smallest municipalities, consisting of gently rolling hills covered with vineyards, orchards, and small settlements. The landscape is defined by the characteristic terraced vineyards of Slovenske Gorice, with panoramic views stretching across the Drava Plain toward Maribor.
The administrative centre is the village of Vitomarci, named after Saint Thomas, with the municipality taking its name from the church of Sveti Andraž (Saint Andrew) located nearby. The area has been settled since prehistoric times, with archaeological evidence of Illyrian and Celtic habitation. Today, the municipality's identity is firmly rooted in viticulture, with wine production being the primary economic activity and the defining element of local culture.
Sveti Andraž v Slovenskih goricah offers visitors an authentic wine-country experience in one of Slovenia's most picturesque agricultural landscapes. The municipality's compact size, quiet roads, and warm hospitality make it ideal for cycling tours, wine tasting, and experiencing the unhurried pace of rural Slovenian life in the heart of its most famous wine region.
When is the best time to visit?
The ideal time to visit is from April to October, with September and October being the most vibrant months due to the grape harvest. Spring (April–May) offers mild weather and blooming vineyards. Summer (June–August) is warm (24–28°C) and sunny, excellent for outdoor activities. Autumn (September–October) brings harvest festivals, open wine cellars, and the spectacular autumn colours of the vines. Wine is central to every meal, with the area producing outstanding Laški Rizling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and the local speciality Šipon (Furmint). Traditional dishes include prekmurska gibanica (layered sweet pastry), gibanica z orehi (walnut strudel), and savoury dishes such as ocvirkovica (crackling spread) and roasted pork with mlinci.
