Why visit?

Straža is a small municipality in southeastern Slovenia, located in the historic region of Lower Carniola (Dolenjska). Situated along the Krka River in a picturesque valley surrounded by low forested hills, Straža is one of Slovenia's youngest municipalities, having been established in 2006 when it split from the larger Municipality of Novo Mesto. The name "Straža" means "guard" or "watchtower" in Slovenian, a reference to a medieval watchtower that once stood in the area.

The municipality is characterized by its tranquil rural landscape, with the Krka River carving a green corridor through the valley. The river itself is one of the cleanest in Slovenia and a popular destination for fishing, kayaking, and swimming during summer months. Straža serves as a quiet base for exploring the Dolenjska region, with attractions like the Krka Monastery, Novo Mesto's old town, and the Gorjanci Hills all within easy reach. Agriculture, particularly fruit growing and viticulture, forms the backbone of the local economy.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to explore Straža is between May and September, when the weather is warm and the Krka River is ideal for swimming and paddling. July and August bring the hottest temperatures (25–30°C) and the liveliest outdoor activity. Spring (April–May) is beautiful with blooming orchards and mild weather perfect for cycling. Autumn (September–October) is harvest season, with local wine festivals and the celebrated Dolenjska wine routes at their peak. Winters are cold (around 0°C) but offer crisp, clear days for hiking on the Gorjanci Hills.

Regional buses connect Straža to Novo Mesto (15 minutes) with limited services on weekends. The nearest railway station is in Novo Mesto, on the Ljubljana–Metlika line. Within the municipality, distances are short enough for cycling on quiet country roads, and walking is pleasant along the Krka River paths.

What should you eat?

The cuisine of Straža and the broader Dolenjska region is known for its rustic, farm-based traditions. Signature dishes include dolenjska potica (a rolled nut cake), kranjska klobasa (Carniolan sausage), jota (bean and sauerkraut stew), and ocvirki (cracklings). The Krka River supplies excellent freshwater fish, particularly trout and grayling, often prepared simply with butter and herbs. Local gostilnas serve cvibak (a twice-baked bread) with spreads as a starter. The Dolenjska wine region is known for its native grape variety, cviček, a unique light red wine with low alcohol content that is a protected designation of origin.

What is the culture like?

Straža celebrates several local events rooted in Dolenjska tradition. The annual Poletje ob Krki (Summer on the Krka) festival in July features concerts, sports competitions, and food stalls along the riverbank. The Feast of St. Martin (November 11) is celebrated with the blessing of young wine — cviček is traditionally the centerpiece. The municipality also participates in the wider Dolenjska folklore traditions, with folk dancing groups preserving the regional costume and music. The nearby Gorjanci Hills are associated with local legends and the šembilja (a mythological creature) in regional folklore.
