Why visit?

Solčava is a small municipality in northern Slovenia, nestled in the remote Logarska Dolina (Logar Valley) at the foot of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. Covering approximately 103 km², it is one of Slovenia's most scenically dramatic municipalities, surrounded by towering alpine peaks including Ojstrica (2,350 m), Planjava (2,394 m), and the striking Rinka waterfall, which cascades 90 metres down a limestone cliff. The municipality encompasses the entire Logarska Dolina landscape park, one of Slovenia's most beautiful alpine valleys.

The administrative centre is the village of Solčava, a charming alpine settlement with classic Slovenian mountain architecture of wooden chalets and hayracks (kozolci). The area is known for its pristine natural environment, traditional alpine farming, and the well-preserved cultural landscape of the Logar Valley. The valley has been a protected landscape park since 1987, preserving its natural beauty and traditional land-use patterns. The Solčava region has long been a destination for hikers, nature lovers, and those seeking the tranquility of the Slovenian Alps.

Solčava offers some of Slovenia's most spectacular alpine scenery, with the Logar Valley providing access to numerous hiking trails, waterfalls, and panoramic viewpoints. The municipality's commitment to sustainable tourism and preservation of traditional alpine culture makes it a model for eco-tourism in the region. The combination of dramatic mountain landscapes, clear mountain streams, and traditional farmhouse hospitality creates an unforgettable alpine experience.

When is the best time to visit?

Summer (June to September) is the peak season, with warm temperatures at valley level (20–25°C) and excellent hiking conditions in the surrounding mountains. July and August are busiest but offer the most reliable weather for high-altitude trails. Autumn (September–October) brings stunning autumn foliage in the valley, quieter trails, and the annual Solčava Berry Festival celebrating local forest products. Winter (December–March) transforms the valley into a snow-covered paradise for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and winter hiking, though some higher mountain trails are inaccessible. Spring (May) sees melting snow and blooming alpine meadows. The Solčava Flower Festival in June celebrates the valley's rich alpine flora.
