Sežana is a town and municipality in the Karst region (Kras) of southwestern Slovenia, just a few kilometres from the Italian border. With a population of about 6,000 in the town itself and roughly 13,000 in the wider municipality, Sežana serves as the unofficial capital of the Slovenian Karst — a unique landscape of limestone plateaus, caves, sinkholes, and dry grassy plains that has shaped a distinctive culture and cuisine. The town sits at an elevation of about 360 metres on the edge of the Karst plateau, with views stretching toward the Adriatic Sea and the Julian Alps on clear days.
Sežana is best known internationally as the home of the Lipica Stud Farm (Kobilarna Lipica), the birthplace of the famous Lipizzaner horses that also give their name to Vienna's Spanish Riding School. The stud farm, established in 1580, is the town's premier attraction and draws horse enthusiasts from around the world. Beyond Lipica, Sežana is a gateway to the entire Karst region — renowned for its caves (including the nearby Škocjan Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site), its distinctive terracotta-and-stone villages, and its legendary food and wine culture. The Karst is famous for its air-dried ham (pršut), its teran red wine, and its olive oil, making Sežana a mecca for food and wine lovers exploring this corner of Slovenia.
When is the best time to visit?
The best time to visit Sežana is from late spring through early autumn (May to October), when the Karst landscape is at its greenest and most outdoor attractions are fully accessible. Summer (June–August) is the peak tourist season, with warm, dry weather and temperatures around 25–30°C. The Lipica Stud Farm offers its full programme of shows and guided tours during this period. Autumn (September–October) is the harvest season for the region's famous teran wine and olive oil, with many local producers offering tastings. Spring and autumn are ideal for hiking and cycling through the Karst landscape. Winter is quiet and can be cold and windy on the exposed plateau, though the caves maintain a constant temperature year-round.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
The Karst region (Kras) has one of Slovenia's most distinctive and celebrated cuisines. The star of the show is Kraški pršut — air-dried ham that is aged in the bora wind that sweeps across the plateau, giving it a unique flavour. Protected by EU geographical indication status, it rivals Italian prosciutto. Other Karst specialities include teran — a bold, ruby-red wine made from the local Refošk grape that is famously high in antioxidants and pairs perfectly with pršut — and Kraški zašink (a type of cured pork shoulder). The region also produces excellent olive oil, štruklji (rolled dumplings), and jota (bean and sauerkraut stew). Sežana has several osmica (seasonal roadside inns) where local farmers sell their own wine, ham, and cheese directly to visitors.
What is the culture like?
Sežana's cultural identity is inseparable from the Karst landscape and its traditions. The Lipica Stud Farm hosts regular shows and events featuring the famous Lipizzaner horses throughout the year. The Karst Wine Festival in Sežana (typically late spring) showcases the region's wines, particularly teran. The Pršut Festival in nearby Dutovlje celebrates the region's famous air-dried ham with tastings and music. The town also hosts a summer concert series in the main square. The traditional osmica custom — where Karst farmers open their cellars to sell wine and food for a few weeks each year — is an essential cultural experience that continues throughout the warmer months.
