Why visit?

Rogaška Slatina is a historic spa municipality in eastern Slovenia, nestled in the wooded hills of the Lower Styria region (Štajerska). It is one of Slovenia's most famous spa towns, renowned for its natural mineral water — particularly the magnesium-rich Donat Mg — which has been bottled and exported worldwide for over a century. The town's identity is inseparable from its wellness tradition: visitors have been coming to "take the waters" since the 19th century, and the town centre is dominated by elegant Art Nouveau and historicist spa buildings, manicured parkland, and grand hotels dating from the Austro-Hungarian period.

Rogaška Slatina sits in a sheltered valley surrounded by forested hills, with the majestic Mount Boč (978 m) rising to the south. The municipality combines the historic spa district with several surrounding villages and the famous St. Jernej vineyards on the slopes of Boč, which produce some of Slovenia's most celebrated white wines. The town's compact, walkable centre, its crystal-clear air, and its reputation for medical wellness make it a destination that attracts both health-seekers and leisure travellers looking for a refined, low-key escape in eastern Slovenia.

When is the best time to visit?

The spa town is at its liveliest from late spring through early autumn (May to October), when all hotels, restaurants, and wellness facilities are fully open. Summer (June–August) is the peak season, with warm temperatures around 25–28°C ideal for walks in the town's parks and surrounding forests. The St. Martin's Festival in November marks the blessing of the new wine and is a highlight for wine enthusiasts visiting the Boč vineyards. Winter is quieter and more affordable, with the spa hotels offering wellness packages at reduced rates — perfect for a peaceful retreat.

What should you eat?

Rogaška Slatina's culinary scene is influenced by the Styrian tradition of hearty, wine-paired cuisine. The region is particularly known for its white wines from the slopes of Mount Boč — the local Laški rizling (Welschriesling) and Šipon (Furmint) are excellent. Dishes to try include štruklji (rolled dumplings), jota (bean and sauerkraut stew), and ocvirkovica (a type of pork crackling spread). The spa town's restaurants cater to health-conscious visitors, offering lighter, modern Slovenian cuisine alongside traditional fare. Several upmarket restaurants in the grand hotels serve multi-course tasting menus with wine pairings.

What is the culture like?

Rogaška Slatina's cultural calendar is anchored by its spa traditions and the wine harvest. The St. Martin's Festival (November 11) is a major event, celebrating the blessing of the young wine with parades, tastings, and feasting. Throughout the summer, the town hosts classical music concerts in the spa parks and at the Zdraviliški Dom (Spa House). The Rogaška Slatina Wine Marathon in autumn combines wine tasting with a run or walk through the Boč vineyards. The town also has a tradition of glassmaking — the Rogaška glassworks was once among Slovenia's most renowned producers of crystal.
