Why visit?

Prebold is a small municipality in north-central Slovenia, located in the Savinja Valley between the towns of Žalec and Celje in the traditional Lower Styria region. The municipality encompasses several settlements along the Savinja River, with the town of Prebold serving as its administrative centre. The area is characterized by its flat agricultural plains, hop fields, and the meandering Savinja River, which provides a scenic backdrop for the entire valley.

Prebold is situated in the heart of Slovenia's hop-growing region — the Savinja Valley is famous for the Žalec hops (Savinjski golding), which are prized by breweries worldwide. The landscape is dominated by trellised hop fields that stretch across the valley floor, creating a distinctive patchwork of green. This agricultural heritage, combined with the area's thermal springs and easy access to Celje, makes Prebold an interesting stop for travellers exploring central Slovenia.

When is the best time to visit?

Late summer (August to September) is the most interesting time, when the hop harvest is in full swing and the fields are at their most beautiful. Spring (April to June) is pleasant with mild temperatures and blooming meadows. Autumn (October) brings the Žalec Hop Festival and the golden colours of the valley. Winter (December to February) is cold and quiet, but the proximity to thermal spas makes it a good base for relaxation.

What should you eat?

The cuisine of Prebold and the Savinja Valley is defined by the hop-growing tradition and the agricultural bounty of the region. Local dishes include kranjska klobasa, jota (bean and sauerkraut soup), štruklji (dumplings), and fresh river fish from the Savinja. The area is also known for its beer culture — many local inns serve craft beers made with the renowned Savinjski golding hops. Pumpkin seed oil and local cheeses complement the regional produce.

What is the culture like?

The highlight of Prebold's cultural calendar is the participation in the Žalec Hop Festival (Ecology of Hops) in late summer, celebrating the hop harvest with brewery tours, beer tastings, music, and traditional food. The Feast of St. James (25 July) is the local parish feast, marked with a community celebration. The valley's beer culture is celebrated year-round with pub events and tastings.
