Why visit?

Postojna is a municipality in southwestern Slovenia, best known worldwide for the spectacular Postojna Caves, one of the most extensive and accessible cave systems on the planet. The municipality lies at the junction of the Karst plateau and the Pivka Basin, a strategic crossroads that has connected the Ljubljana basin with the Adriatic coast for centuries. The main town of Postojna is a lively administrative and tourist centre, its economy dominated by the cave tourism industry, which draws over one million visitors annually.

Beyond the famous caves, the municipality encompasses a diverse landscape of karst fields, forested hills, and the valley of the Pivka River. The village of Predjama, 9 km north of Postojna, is home to one of Europe's most dramatic medieval castles, built directly into the mouth of a cave. The wider area is riddled with underground rivers, sinkholes, and lesser-known caves that reward exploration by hikers and caving enthusiasts.

For travellers, Postojna is an essential stop on any Slovenian itinerary. The two headline attractions — Postojna Caves and Predjama Castle — are justifiably famous and can be comfortably visited in a single day. But the municipality also offers excellent hiking in the Rak Škocjan valley, cycling routes through the karst landscape, and a good selection of restaurants and accommodation that make it a convenient base for exploring the broader Karst region.

When is the best time to visit?

Postojna is a year-round destination because the caves maintain a constant 10°C regardless of the season. The busiest period is July and August, when queues for cave tours can be long; booking tickets online in advance is strongly recommended. May–June and September–October offer milder weather, fewer crowds, and pleasant conditions for hiking and exploring Predjama. Winter (November–March) is the quietest season, with cold, damp weather above ground but short wait times below. The Postojna Caves Are Open Every Day Of The Year.

How do you get around?

Postojna is well-connected by road and rail. The A1 motorway runs past the town, providing a 45-minute drive to Ljubljana (50 km northeast) and 50 minutes to the coastal city of Koper (55 km southwest). The railway station is 2 km from the cave entrance (a 20-minute walk or short taxi ride). Regular trains connect Postojna with Ljubljana, Sežana, and Trieste. Local buses serve the caves and Predjama Castle during the summer season. Taxis are available from the cave ticket office (approximately €15 each way to Predjama). A shuttle bus operates between the train station, caves, and Predjama Castle during part of the year.

What should you eat?

The cuisine of the Karst and Pivka region is centred on robust, earthy flavours. Local specialities include pršut (air-dried Karst ham), teran (the region's distinctive red wine), jota (a thick stew of sauerkraut, beans, and pork ribs), and štruklji (rolled dumplings). The forests yield wild mushrooms and game, while the karst fields produce excellent potatoes, cabbage, and turnips. Restaurants in Postojna town range from casual pizzerias to traditional gostilnas serving Slovenian classics. A two-course meal for two with drinks costs approximately €20–40. The caves complex itself has several cafes and snack bars.

What is the culture like?

Postojna's cultural life revolves around its two world-class attractions. The Postojna Caves have hosted classical concerts in their vast underground concert hall since the 19th century. The annual Postojna Summer Festival (July–August) features open-air concerts, theatre performances, and food festivals in the town centre. The Predjama Castle hosts a medieval tournament and jousting event in the summer months. Local crafts include Karst stone carving and lace-making, both available at souvenir shops in the town. The nearby village of Hrašče produces traditional wooden toys.
