Lovrenc na Pohorju is a municipality in northeastern Slovenia, located on the southern slopes of the Pohorje mountain range approximately 12 km southwest of Maribor. The municipality takes its name from St. Lawrence (Lovrenc in Slovene), the patron saint of the parish church, and its position "na Pohorju" (on Pohorje) accurately describes its setting: the settlement clings to the forested hillside of the Pohorje massif, with steep streets and houses offering sweeping views of the Drava valley below.
The area has long been associated with forestry and hunting, and the dense Pohorje forests that surround the town are crisscrossed with logging roads that now serve as hiking and mountain-biking trails. In winter, the nearby slopes of the Mariborsko Pohorje ski resort attract visitors to what is one of Slovenia's largest ski areas, while summer brings hikers, trail runners, and foragers seeking the region's famous wild blueberries (borovnice) and mushrooms.
For travellers, Lovrenc na Pohorju offers a quieter, more authentic alternative to the more developed ski centres on the Maribor side of the mountain. Its traditional gostilne, family-run guesthouses, and direct access to both summer and winter mountain activities make it an appealing base for anyone seeking to explore the Pohorje range at a relaxed pace. The views across the Drava Plain toward Ptuj and the Croatian border are breathtaking, especially at sunset.
When is the best time to visit?
The ski season runs from December to March, with January and February offering the most reliable snow conditions on the Pohorje slopes. Summer (June to September) is ideal for hiking and mountain biking, with temperatures averaging 18–25°C at the elevation of the town itself (approximately 600 m). The Pohorje peaks are 5–10°C cooler, offering relief from valley heat. Autumn (October–November) is the season for blueberry picking, mushroom foraging, and spectacular foliage colours, though the weather becomes increasingly unsettled.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
A car is the most practical way to reach and explore Lovrenc na Pohorju. The town lies at the end of a secondary road that branches off the main Maribor–Slovenska Bistrica route (road No. 430) and winds uphill through the forest for about 8 km. Regular bus services connect Lovrenc na Pohorju with Maribor's main bus station (approximately 30 minutes, roughly hourly on weekdays). The ski slopes are accessible by a cable car system that connects the lower Pohorje stations to the higher runs; a local ski bus operates during the winter season. Taxis from Maribor cost approximately €20–25.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
The food culture of Lovrenc na Pohorju is shaped by its mountain location and Pohorje forest bounty. Signature dishes include pohorska omleta (a fluffy oven-baked omelette, often served with blueberries), game stews (divjačina), and štruklji with wild blueberry filling. The Pohorje forests are legendary for their borovnice (wild blueberries), which appear in desserts, jams, and schnapps. Traditional gostilne serve hearty fare: roast pork with žganci (buckwheat spoonbread), creamy mushroom soups made from foraged porcini, and the ubiquitous kranjska klobasa. Local hunters' lodges serve game specialties in season.
What is the culture like?
Lovrenc na Pohorju's cultural calendar is anchored by the Feast of St. Lawrence (10 August), the town's patron saint day, celebrated with a church service, fair, and traditional music. The Blueberry Festival (Pohorski borovničev festival) in late August or early September celebrates the wild blueberry harvest with tastings, baking competitions, and guided foraging walks. Winter brings the quieter charms of the Lovrenc Winter Fair (December) with mulled wine and local crafts. The town's cultural centre hosts occasional concerts and exhibitions.
