Križevci is a municipality in the Prekmurje region of northeastern Slovenia, situated in the flat, fertile plain of the Mur River valley near the border with Hungary. The municipality consists of nine small villages clustered around the central settlement of Križevci pri Ljutomeru, commonly referred to simply as Križevci. This is classic Pannonian landscape: open fields of corn, wheat, and sunflowers stretch to the horizon, interspersed with poplar-lined lanes, small vineyards, and scattered farmsteads.
The municipality's name derives from križ (cross), referencing the 17th-century Baroque Church of the Holy Cross — the most prominent landmark in the area. Historically part of the Hungarian-dominated Prekmurje region, Križevci retains a multi-ethnic character, with a small Hungarian minority and a strong tradition of regional identity distinct from the rest of Slovenia. The economy has long been based on agriculture, particularly grain farming and wine production, with the nearby Ljutomer wine-growing district producing some of Slovenia's most celebrated sparkling wines.
For travellers, Križevci is a peaceful rural stopover that offers a taste of Pannonian Slovenia — a landscape and culture quite different from the Alpine stereotypes. It works well as a cycling destination on the flat Prekmurje plains, and its location near the Mura River and the Croatian border makes it a convenient base for exploring the wider tri-border region.
When to Visit
Spring (April–June) and early autumn (September–October) offer the most pleasant conditions, with mild temperatures and the landscape at its greenest. Summers (July–August) are the warmest and can be hot and humid, with daytime temperatures often exceeding 30°C, but this is also when the vineyards are most lush. Autumn is harvest time and the most atmospheric season, particularly around St. Martin's Day (11 November) when the new wine is blessed. Winter is cold and often grey, with average highs around 2–5°C.

WhatsAppGetting Around
Križevci is car-dependent. The municipality is located about 5 km south of Ljutomer on the road toward the Croatian border crossing at Središče ob Dravi. Regional roads connect to Ljutomer, Ormož, and Ptuj. Public bus service is limited to a few daily routes serving Ljutomer and Murska Sobota on weekdays. Bicycles are an excellent option for exploring the flat terrain, with quiet country lanes linking the municipality's villages. The nearest railway station is in Ljutomer (5 km), with connections to Murska Sobota and Ormož.

WhatsAppCuisine
The cuisine of Križevci is thoroughly Prekmurje in character, with strong Hungarian and Croatian influences. Signature dishes include prekmurska gibanica (the famous layered pastry), bograč (cauldron goulash with game or beef), and bučno olje (pumpkin seed oil) drizzled over salads. The local vineyards, part of the Štajerska Slovenija wine region, produce excellent white wines, particularly Šipon (Furmint), Renski Rizling (Riesling), and Laški Rizling (Welschriesling). The Ljutomer region is especially known for its sparkling wines made using the traditional méthode champenoise.
Culture & Festivals
The main event in Križevci is the annual Križevci Summer Festival (Križevško poletje) in August, featuring folk music concerts, dance performances, and local wine and food tastings. The Feast of the Holy Cross (14 September) is celebrated with a church pilgrimage and fair. Prekmurje's distinctive folk music, played on cimbal (hammered dulcimer) and violin, is still performed at local celebrations. Neighbouring Ljutomer hosts the Pršutijada (ham festival) and the Štajerska wine fair, both well worth attending.
