Why visit?

Cirkulane is a small municipality in eastern Slovenia, located in the Haloze region — a narrow strip of hills stretching between the Drava and Sava rivers. The Haloze region is one of Slovenia's most distinctive and untouristed landscapes, characterised by steep, vineyard-covered hills, deep valleys, and scattered villages. Cirkulane lies near the western edge of the Haloze hills, with the municipality extending across approximately 31 square kilometres.

The main village, Cirkulane, is a compact settlement with a parish church and a few local amenities. The municipality includes the villages of Brezovec, Dolane, Gradišča, Gruškovec, Mali Okič, Pristava, Slatina, and Veliki Vrh. The economy is predominantly agricultural, with viticulture — particularly white wine production — being the primary activity. The landscape is defined by terraced vineyards that climb the steep slopes of the Haloze Hills.

For travellers, Cirkulane and the wider Haloze region offer a truly off-the-beaten-path experience. The winding hill roads, panoramic viewpoints, and small family-run wine cellars provide an intimate introduction to Slovenian wine culture, far from the crowds of the better-known wine regions. It is an ideal destination for slow travel, hiking, and cycling.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit is from late spring to early autumn (May to October). The Haloze hills are at their greenest in May and June, while the grape harvest in September and October is the highlight of the year. Summer (July–August) can be hot, but the hills offer some relief with occasional breezes. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant for hiking and cycling. Winters are cold and quiet, with many wine cellars closed.

How do you get around?

The narrow, winding roads of the Haloze region require careful driving, but a car is the most practical way to explore Cirkulane and its surroundings. The main roads connecting the villages are paved but steep in places. Cycling is popular on the Haloze Wine Road, though the gradient is challenging. There is limited public transport — a few daily buses connect Cirkulane to Ptuj (approximately 20 km north) and to the town of Podlehnik.

What should you eat?

The cuisine of Haloze is hearty and wine-centric. Local specialities include haloški ocvirkovca (a savoury pastry with cracklings), krvavice (blood sausages), and roast pork. The region produces excellent white wines, particularly laški rizling, sauvignon, traminec (gewürztraminer), and šipon (furmint). Wine cellars in the area offer tastings. Pumpkin seed oil, honey, and home-cured meats are also local products to look for.

What is the culture like?

Cirkulane celebrates the Feast of St. John the Baptist (24 June) with a local fair and religious procession. The Haloze Wine Festival, held in nearby Podlehnik or Majšperk in autumn, is the main regional event. Folklore groups from the area perform traditional Haloze songs and dances at local celebrations. The region has a tradition of trgatev (grape harvest) festivals in September and October, where wine cellars open their doors to visitors.
