Benedikt is a small rural municipality in northeastern Slovenia, set among the rolling hills of the Slovenske gorice (Slovenian Hills) in the historic region of Lower Styria (Štajerska). It lies within the broader Podravje statistical region, a short drive north of the regional hub of Maribor and close to the market town of Lenart. The municipality takes its name from its central settlement, Benedikt, which in turn derives from a parish dedicated to St. Benedict.
This is gentle, agricultural country — vineyards on south-facing slopes, orchards, scattered farmsteads, and small villages strung along ridgelines. The landscape is classic Slovenske gorice: a seemingly endless ripple of hills draped in vines, with red-roofed churches perched on every second summit. It is not a destination of monumental sights but of landscape and rural rhythm: the kind of place travellers come to for quiet wine roads, cycling through the hills, and an unhurried taste of Štajerska village life away from the tourist circuit.
Tourism is minimal here. Benedikt has no major hotels, no ski slopes, and no UNESCO sites. Its appeal lies in the opposite direction — unhurried countryside, agritourism (tourist farms serving home-grown food and wine), and the authentic rhythm of a Slovenian wine-growing community that sees few foreign visitors. It works best as a quiet base for exploring the wider Slovenske gorice wine region or as a stop on a cycling tour of northeastern Slovenia.
When is the best time to visit?
Late spring through early autumn (May–October) is the most rewarding window, when the Slovenske gorice are green, the vineyards in leaf, and the weather warm and settled. Early autumn (September–October) is especially attractive in this wine-growing belt, coinciding with the grape harvest and the brilliant yellow and gold of the turning vineyards. Summer weekends see a modest uptick in visitors to the region's tourist farms and wine cellars. Winters are cold, grey, and quiet — most agritourisms close or reduce hours.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
Benedikt is best explored by car or bicycle. The municipality sits a short drive from Lenart (the nearest larger town, with shops and services) and roughly 20–25 km north-northeast of Maribor, the main gateway with rail and motorway connections. Local roads wind through the hills connecting the scattered villages — the terrain is ideal for road cycling, with gentle gradients and light traffic. Public transport is limited to infrequent rural buses serving Lenart and Maribor.
Where should you go?

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Benedikt's cuisine is classic Štajerska: hearty, seasonal, and built around the produce of the surrounding hills. Pumpkin-seed oil (bučno olje) is the signature ingredient, drizzled over salads, soups, grilled meats, and even ice cream. The region is known for prekmurska gibanica (a layered pastry with poppy seeds, walnuts, apples, and cottage cheese), štruklji (rolled dumplings), and roasted pork with horseradish. Autumn brings game dishes — venison and wild boar — and the grape harvest fills tables with new wine. Most local dining is at tourist farms (turistične kmetije), where meals are served family-style and made almost entirely from ingredients grown on the farm.
What is the culture like?
Benedikt's cultural calendar revolves around wine and the agricultural year. The Benedikt Wine Festival (late September or early October) marks the harvest with cellar tours, wine tastings, and traditional music in the village centre. St. Martin's Day (11 November) is celebrated with the blessing of the new wine, a region-wide tradition observed at every tourist farm and cellar. The Slovenske gorice cycling marathon (August) passes through the municipality, drawing amateur cyclists from across Slovenia. The parish church of St. Benedict hosts occasional classical concerts in summer.

WhatsAppWhat are the standout experiences?
- Wine tasting at a local tourist farm — Visit one of the family-run turistične kmetije scattered through the hills for a tasting of Štajerska wines — especially Laški Riesling, Sauvignonasse, Šipon (Furmint), and the orange-skinned Štajerska beli pinot — paired with home-cured meats and pumpkin-seed-oil bread.
- Cycling the Slovenske gorice wine roads — The gently rolling hills and quiet country lanes make this one of Slovenia's best regions for relaxed road cycling, with wine cellars and farm stops at almost every turn.
- Harvest-season stay — Visit in September or October to experience the grape harvest first-hand, with many tourist farms offering guests the chance to join the picking and pressing.
- Pumpkin-seed oil pressing demonstration — Several farms press their own pumpkin-seed oil in autumn; watching the dark, aromatic oil emerge from the press is a simple but memorable experience unique to Štajerska.
- St. Martin's Day celebration — Join the annual new-wine blessing at the parish church, followed by a festive meal at a local farm featuring roast goose or pork with štruklji and sauerkraut.
