Beltinci is a small municipality in the Prekmurje region of north-eastern Slovenia, situated on the gentle plains of the Mura River basin near the Hungarian border. As the historical and administrative centre of the Ravensko sub-region of Prekmurje, Beltinci offers visitors a peaceful landscape of agricultural fields, traditional whitewashed farmhouses with thatched roofs, and a relaxed rural pace that feels worlds away from the tourist crowds of Ljubljana or the Julian Alps. The municipality consists of the town of Beltinci and several surrounding villages, including Lipa, Melinci, and Ižakovci.
The region of Prekmurje has a distinct cultural identity within Slovenia, shaped by centuries of Hungarian rule, a unique dialect, and a predominantly Lutheran religious heritage. Beltinci's most famous landmark is the Beltinci Evangelical Church, a striking Lutheran church with its characteristic onion-domed tower that dominates the flat horizon for kilometres around. The area is known for its thermal springs, fertile farmland, and as the heartland of prekmurska gibanica — Slovenia's most celebrated layered pastry.
For travellers, Beltinci serves as a quiet base for exploring the Prekmurje region: the lively town of Murska Sobota (10 km north), the spa resorts of Moravske Toplice and Lendava, the Mura River biosphere reserve, and the Hungarian-Slovenian borderlands with their mix of cultures, cuisines, and thermal baths.
When is the best time to visit?
The best time to visit Beltinci is from late April to September, when the flatlands of Prekmurje are green and warm. Spring (April–May) brings mild temperatures (15–23°C), blossoming orchards, and the lush greening of the Mura plains. Summer (June–August) is hot, with daytime highs reaching 30–35°C, ideal for the outdoor thermal pools at nearby resorts. Autumn (September–October) is harvest season, with local food festivals and the golden-brown colours of the vineyards along the nearby Goričko hills.
Winter (November–March) is cold and often foggy on the plains, with temperatures frequently below freezing. The thermal baths are still enjoyable, but the landscape is drab. Many rural restaurants and smaller attractions close or operate limited hours between Christmas and the end of February.
Key annual events include the Beltinci Fair (first weekend in September), a traditional agricultural and crafts fair with livestock shows, local food stalls, and folk music. The Prekmurje Wine Festival (late August, rotating locations) showcases the region's white wines. The Mura River Regatta (July) sees locals floating in handmade rafts down the Mura River.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
Beltinci is a small town with a compact centre that can be easily explored on foot. For visiting surrounding villages, thermal spas, or Murska Sobota, a car is the most practical option. The town sits at the junction of regional roads R1-230 and R2-352, with good connections to Murska Sobota (10 km north, 10 minutes), Lendava (25 km east, 20 minutes), and the Hungarian border at Pince (15 km east).
Beltinci has a railway station on the Murska Sobota–Čakovec (Croatia) line, with regional trains running roughly every two hours. The journey to Murska Sobota takes 8 minutes (€2), to Ljubljana requires a change in Pragersko or Maribor and takes about 3 hours. Bus services connect Beltinci to Murska Sobota, Lendava, and Ljubljana, though frequencies on weekends are limited. Cycling is pleasant on the flat terrain, with bike routes following country lanes through the Mura plains.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Prekmurje cuisine is distinct from other Slovenian regions, reflecting Hungarian and Austrian influences. The absolute signature dish is prekmurska gibanica — a rich layered pastry filled with poppy seeds, walnuts, apples, raisins, and cottage cheese, served dusted with icing sugar. Savoury staples include bograč (a hearty goulash-like stew of beef, pork, and game cooked in a cauldron over an open fire), retkva (grated horseradish root served with smoked meat), and bučino olje (pumpkin seed oil) drizzled over salads or potatoes.
Local wines from the surrounding Goričko hills are predominantly white — focus on the Šipon (Furmint), Renski rizling (Rhine Riesling), and Sauvignon varieties. The region also produces štefanjska rakija (fruit brandy). For a traditional meal, head to Gostilna Pri Lipi in Beltinci or the tourist farms in the surrounding villages. Nearly every restaurant in the area serves bograč, and the rivalry between villages over whose version is best is a running joke among locals. Vegetarian options focus on seasonal vegetables, potatoes, and cheese.
What is the culture like?
Beltinci is the spiritual centre of Slovenian Lutheranism — the Beltinci Evangelical Church is the largest and most important Lutheran church in Slovenia, built in Neo-Romanesque style with a prominent copper-clad spire. The Lutheran heritage shapes the cultural calendar, with the Reformation Day commemoration (31 October) featuring concerts and services.
The annual Beltinci Fair (first weekend of September) is the biggest local event, drawing visitors from across Prekmurje for livestock competitions, artisanal crafts, folk dancing, and food stalls. The Mura River Cultural Summer (July–August) hosts concerts and theatre performances in Beltinci and nearby villages. Prekmurje's folk music tradition — featuring the cimbal (hammered dulcimer) and tamburica — is still alive in local ensembles, particularly during weddings and fairs.
