Habovka
Žilinský kraj, Slovakia
Why visit Habovka?
Habovka is a rural mountain village with roughly 1,350 residents in the historical Orava region of northern Slovakia, located within the Tvrdošín District of Žilinský kraj. Situated at an elevation of 736 meters in the Studená dolina valley, it lies at the northern foot of the Western Tatras (Západné Tatry – Roháče) and the forested Skorušinské vrchy hills, where the Blatná stream flows into the Studený potok.
Together with the adjacent village of Zuberec, Habovka functions as a quiet base for hikers, mountaineers, and winter sports enthusiasts exploring Tatra National Park (TANAP). The settlement was founded in the late 16th century under Wallachian pastoral law and preserved sheep-farming, timber-milling, and traditional folk music traditions through the centuries before developing guesthouses and agro-tourism infrastructure.
The local climate is montane continental, marked by cool summers with daytime highs between 18°C and 23°C (64°F to 73°F) and chilly nights, alongside cold, snowy winters where temperatures consistently stay below freezing (daily highs around -4°C to 1°C / 25°F to 34°F). Visitors travel here primarily for alpine ridge trails, glacial tarns, downhill and Nordic skiing, and geothermal pools in neighboring Oravice.
