Overview

Košický kraj is one of the eight administrative regions (kraje) of Slovakia, located in the eastern part of the country. The region is known for its historic towns, UNESCO-listed sites, the Slovak Karst cave systems, and the dramatic gorges of Slovak Paradise. With a mix of historic towns, natural landscapes, and cultural traditions, it offers visitors a diverse range of experiences throughout the year.

The region covers an area of approximately 6,752 square kilometres and is home to a population of around 780,000 people. Its administrative centre is Košice, which serves as the economic and cultural heart of the region. The landscape varies from lowland plains along the Danube and Váh rivers to the forested mountain ranges that form part of the Western Carpathians.

When to Visit

The best time to visit Košický kraj largely depends on your interests. Summer (June to August) offers warm temperatures ideal for hiking, exploring castles, and outdoor festivals, with average highs reaching 25–30°C. Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) bring milder weather, fewer crowds, and beautiful colours in the vineyards and forests — perfect for cultural sightseeing and wine tasting.

Winter (December to February) transforms the mountainous areas into a destination for winter sports and Christmas markets, though temperatures can drop below freezing. The region's cultural calendar includes several notable festivals: the Košice Peace Marathon (October), the Košice Culture Summer (June–August), and the traditional Jánošík Days in Terchová. For pleasant weather and manageable crowds, late spring and early autumn are the most rewarding seasons.
