Zlatiborski okrug (Zlatibor District) is located in western Serbia, covering the largest area of any Serbian district at 6,140 km². Named after the famous Zlatibor Mountain, the district is one of Serbia's most important tourist regions, known for its stunning mountain landscapes, traditional villages, ethnic architecture, and outdoor activities. The administrative centre is Užice, a historic city on the Đetinja River. The district also includes parts of Tara National Park, the Drina River valley, and the Zlatibor plateau.
The district's terrain is remarkably varied, from the broad grassy Zlatibor plateau at 1,000 metres to the dramatic Drina River canyon and the peaks of Tara National Park. The Zlatibor Mountain itself is a popular year-round destination, offering hiking in summer and modest skiing in winter. The Uvac Special Nature Reserve, with its spectacular river meanders and griffon vulture colony, is one of Serbia's most important natural sites. Traditional villages like Sirogojno and Mokra Gora preserve the architectural heritage of the region.
When is the best time to visit?
Zlatiborski okrug is pleasant to visit year-round. Summer (June–August) is peak season, with the Zlatibor plateau offering cool mountain air, hiking trails, and the Sirogojno Open-Air Museum in full operation. Spring (April–May) brings wildflowers to the mountain meadows and is ideal for hiking before the summer crowds arrive.
Autumn (September–October) offers spectacular foliage in Tara National Park and harvest season in the wine-producing areas. Winter (December–February) transforms Zlatibor into a ski destination, while the Mokra Gora heritage railway operates year-round. The Drina River is particularly beautiful in spring when snowmelt swells the water.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
Užice is 200 km southwest of Belgrade via the A2 expressway, about 2 hours 15 minutes. The Belgrade–Bar railway line passes through Požega, Užice, and Priboj, with daily trains connecting to Belgrade, Podgorica, and Bar. The scenic Šargan Eight railway (Mokra Gora) is a must-do tourist train. Buses connect the main towns along the valley routes. For the mountain resorts, a car is highly recommended. The narrow roads to Sjenica and the Uvac reserve can be challenging.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Zlatibor is famous for its dairy products — the Zlatibor cheese (a crumbly white cheese), kajmak, and pršut (dry-cured ham) are iconic Serbian food products. Roasted lamb under the bell (jagnjetina ispod sača) is a regional speciality. The mountain air and traditional village smokehouses (pušnice) give Zlatibor prosciutto its distinctive flavour. Kafanas in Zlatibor town and Užice serve all these alongside grilled meats and hearty stews. The region's pure mountain water feeds streams used in local brewing, and herbal teas from the mountain meadows are popular with visitors.
What is the culture like?
The district's cultural heritage spans medieval monasteries, traditional architecture, and film. The Mileševa Monastery near Prijepolje, a 13th-century foundation, is home to the famous "White Angel" fresco. Drvengrad (Wooden Town), an ethno-village built by film director Emir Kusturica near Mokra Gora, is a quirky blend of traditional architecture and film set. The Kadinjača Memorial Complex commemorates the 1941 Battle of Kadinjača. Traditional folk music and kolo dancing are practiced at village festivals throughout the district. The Sirogojno Open-Air Museum preserves the traditional architecture of the Zlatibor region.
