Nišavski okrug is a district in southeastern Serbia centred on Niš, the country's third-largest city and one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in Europe. The district stretches from the Nišava river valley in the north to the Stara Planina (Balkan) mountain range in the south, encompassing fertile lowlands, limestone gorges, and the approach to one of the Balkans' most dramatic mountain ridges. Niš itself is a city of layered history — Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and Serbian — with a compact old town, a well-preserved fortress, and a reputation for warm hospitality.
The region's strategic importance is written into its geography. The Nišava valley has served as a corridor between Central Europe and the Aegean for millennia, and the city sits at the junction of roads leading to Belgrade, Sofia, Skopje, and the Adriatic. This crossroads character gives Nišavski okrug a cosmopolitan edge unusual for a Serbian district of its size, visible in its cuisine, its multicultural heritage, and the lively atmosphere of its café culture.
When is the best time to visit?
Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) are the most pleasant times to visit Niš, with mild temperatures ideal for walking the fortress and old town. The Nisville Jazz Festival in August and the Film Festival in autumn draw cultural visitors. Summer (June to August) brings warm days perfect for exploring the Stara Planina approaches and outdoor dining. The Niš Christmas market (December) has grown in recent years. Winter is cold but manageable for city sightseeing, and the Stara Planina ski areas open from December onward.

Niš is a major transport hub with direct bus and rail connections to Belgrade (about 240 km, roughly 3 hours by bus or train), Sofia (about 200 km), Skopje (about 240 km), and Thessaloniki (about 330 km). The E75 motorway connects Niš northward to Belgrade and southward toward Skopje. Regional buses serve Aleksinac, Svrljig, Doljevac, and other towns in the district. Niš Constantine the Great Airport offers domestic and some international flights. Driving within the district is straightforward on the main roads, though mountain routes toward Stara Planina are winding.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Niš is widely regarded as one of Serbia's great food cities. The Niš specialty is ćevapi — the local version is larger and more heavily spiced than the Sarajevo style, served in somun bread with chopped onions and kajmak. The city's boem quarter (Kazandžijsko Sokače) is lined with traditional kafanas serving grilled meats, spit-roasted pork, and hearty bean soup (prebranac). Niš is also known for its plum brandy (šljivovica) production and its lively café culture. The Stara Planina area offers mountain specialties including lamb cooked under a sač (bell), wild mushrooms, and trutenak (brined cheese). Aleksinac and the surrounding villages produce wine from the Prokupac grape variety.
What is the culture like?
Niš hosts the Nisville Jazz Festival each August, one of the largest jazz festivals in the Balkans, held in the open-air setting of the Niš Fortress. The Niš Film Festival (Niški filmski festival) takes place in autumn. The city's bohemian quarter, Kazandžijsko Sokače (Coppersmiths' Street), maintains a tradition of live music and literary gatherings that dates back to the 19th century. Traditional folk music and kolo dancing feature at village festivals throughout the district. The Niš Christmas Fair has become an increasingly popular winter attraction.
