Overview

Ziguinchor is the capital region of the Casamance, the lush southern part of Senegal separated from the north by The Gambia. It is culturally distinct, with a strong Diola (Jola) heritage and a landscape of rice paddies, palm groves, mangrove creeks, and Atlantic beaches. The region includes the resort of Cap Skirring with its spectacular beaches, the historic island of Carabane, and the Basse-Casamance National Park.

When to Visit

Peak season (November–March): The dry, warm months with comfortable humidity, sunny skies, and temperatures around 25–32°C — ideal for Cap Skirring's beaches, boat trips through the mangrove creeks, and exploring Carabane island. This is when Casamance is at its most inviting, with the harmattan winds keeping conditions pleasantly dry from late December onward. Expect the highest accommodation prices and the most visitors, particularly around the year-end holidays.

Shoulder season (October and April–May): October marks the tail end of the rains as the landscape stays lush and green but downpours become sporadic. April and May are intensely hot (temperatures can push past 35°C) but dry, with fewer tourists and lower rates. These months suit travelers on a budget who don't mind the heat.

Off season (June–September): Heavy monsoon rains drench the Casamance — roads can flood, some rural tracks become impassable, and the humidity is oppressive. Beach tourism drops off almost entirely, and some lodges near Cap Skirring close for the season. This is not the time to visit unless you specifically want to see the rice paddies at their greenest.

Best time to visit: Late November through mid-March offers the ideal balance of dry weather, manageable heat, and full access to all attractions. The Festival International de Musique de Ziguinchor, usually held in late February or early March, is a highlight worth timing a trip around — it brings together West African musicians, traditional Jola dance, and vibrant street celebrations across the city. Avoid August and September if possible, when the rains peak and the region is at its wettest and most difficult to navigate.
