Overview

Thiès is a region in western Senegal, between Dakar and the interior. It is one of the country's most important economic regions, with the city of Thiès as a railway and transport hub, and the Petite Côte coastline featuring major beach resorts at Saly, Mbour, and Popenguine. The region also includes the religious city of Tivaouane, the traditional fishing port of Joal-Fadiouth, and the sacred forest of Popenguine.

When to Visit

The best time to visit Thiès and the Petite Côte is the dry season, from November to April: days are warm and sunny with low humidity, the Atlantic breeze keeps temperatures pleasant (25–30 °C), and beach resorts at Saly and Mbour run at full capacity. The coolest months are December to February, when occasional harmattan haze drifts in from the Sahara but rainfall is virtually zero — ideal for sightseeing in Tivaouane and coastal excursions from Joal-Fadiouth. March to May is the hot dry season; temperatures climb above 35 °C and the landscape turns golden-brown, but crowds thin and accommodation rates drop.

The off season runs from June through October (the hivernage, or rainy season), with the heaviest downpours in August and September — roads can flood, the coast is muggy, and some Petite Côte resorts scale back operations. June and October serve as shoulder months with scattered showers that rarely last all day, and they offer the best balance of lower prices and tolerable weather.

Time a visit around the Festival de Joal-Fadiouth (typically held in late autumn around November), a vibrant celebration of the region's fishing heritage with traditional music, boat races, and seafood feasts on the shell-island of Fadiouth. Avoid the peak of the rains in August–September unless you specifically want to see the lush green Senegalese countryside at its most dramatic.
