Overview

Kédougou is a region in southeastern Senegal, part of the historic Bassari Country, a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape. It is Senegal's most scenic region, with rolling hills, waterfalls, and the Gambia River headwaters. The region is home to the Niokolo-Koba National Park (UNESCO), the Dindefelo Falls, and the Bassari people with their distinctive traditions.

When to Visit

Kédougou's best window is November to March — the dry season brings warm days (25–35 °C), cool Harmattan breezes from December through February, and clear skies ideal for trekking to Dindefelo Falls and game-viewing in Niokolo-Koba National Park. October and April–May are shoulder months: October sees the rains tail off and landscapes still lush and green, while April and May are the hottest months (frequently above 40 °C) but offer fewer visitors and lower lodge rates. June to September is the deep rainy season — heavy downpours make unpaved roads to Kédougou virtually impassable, waterfalls can be dangerous to approach, and most guides discourage travel; this is the month-range to avoid. If you want to coincide with local culture, plan around the Kankurang masquerade festival (traditional Manding and Bassari masked dances, typically held in January during the dry-season celebrations), one of the most vibrant cultural events in southeastern Senegal.
