Overview

Kaolack is a region in west-central Senegal on the Saloum River. The regional capital, Kaolack, is a major commercial and religious centre (the holy city of the Tijaniyya brotherhood). The region includes agricultural towns and the Saloum River estuary.

When to Visit

The best time to visit Kaolack is during the dry season from November to February, when daytime highs sit around 28–32°C with low humidity and little rain — ideal for exploring the Saloum River estuary and the city's bustling weekly grand marchés. The hot dry shoulder season (March–May) brings scorching temperatures often above 38°C and the dusty harmattan winds from the Sahara, which can reduce visibility; this period is tolerable but less comfortable and sees fewer visitors, so prices for accommodation tend to drop. The rainy season from June to October is the off season: heavy afternoon downpours, muggy humidity, and unpaved roads that turn muddy, though the Saloum mangroves and rice paddies are at their lushest. If your trip falls in late September or early October, try to align it with the Grand Magal de Touba, the massive Tijaniyya pilgrimage in nearby Touba that draws millions of worshippers and transforms the entire Kaolack region — a truly extraordinary cultural event, though it means peak crowds and higher demand across all area hotels.
