South Rivers
Charlotte, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
Why visit South Rivers?
South Rivers is a small inland village in Charlotte parish, set in the fertile agricultural valleys above the windward (Atlantic) coast of Saint Vincent, near Colonarie and within reach of the Windward Highway about 25 km north of Kingstown. It lies in classic Vincentian farming country — terraced hillsides of bananas, dasheen, arrowroot, coconut and provision crops, watered by the rivers that give the area its name. The village grew with the windward coast's plantation and small-farming economy and remains, above all, an agricultural community rather than a tourist destination.
South Rivers' appeal is its setting and its authenticity: a quiet, green, working village in one of Saint Vincent's productive valleys, surrounded by rivers, gardens and forested hills with La Soufrière volcano (which last erupted in April 2021) rising to the north. It draws the traveller interested in rural life, hiking, rivers and agriculture rather than beaches or nightlife — and it pairs naturally with nearby Colonarie and its forest reserve and waterfalls.
The climate is tropical and trade-wind-cooled, with little temperature variation (highs around 28–31°C year-round). Come in the December-to-May dry season, when river crossings and trails are best; the May-to-November wet season, overlapping hurricane season, brings heavier rain to these windward valleys and can make tracks muddy and rivers high. The settlement is small and informal, strung along its valley road.

By Plane
The nearest airport is Argyle International Airport (SVD) on Saint Vincent's southeast coast, roughly 15–18 km south of South Rivers. A taxi costs an agreed fare (confirm first — roughly EC$70–110 for the distance), while dollar-van minibuses via the Windward Highway are far cheaper at a few EC dollars, with a short connection inland. Argyle links to regional hubs including Barbados (BGI), Saint Lucia and Grenada, plus some direct international service.
By Car / Road
South Rivers lies inland off the Windward Highway near Colonarie, about 25 km (around 45–55 minutes' drive) north of Kingstown, reached by a side road climbing from the coast into the valley. Roads are paved on the main route but narrow and winding on the inland approach. Dollar-van minibuses (plates beginning "H") run along the coastal highway for a few EC dollars; for the village itself you may need to walk the last stretch, take a taxi, or drive. Travel early as vans thin out in the afternoon. Driving is on the left.
The village is small and best explored on foot — its lanes, gardens and riverside are all walkable. To reach the wider valley, neighbouring villages or the Colonarie forest reserve, use a hired car on the inland tracks, arrange a taxi, or join a local guide; the upper valleys and trails are walked. Dollar vans serve the coastal highway (fares from EC$1) but not the interior lanes. There are no ride-hailing apps; agree taxi fares in advance.
What are the things to do?
South Rivers valley and farms — terraced banana, dasheen, arrowroot and coconut gardens climbing the hillsides, a quintessential windward agricultural landscape; freely viewable from the valley road.

La Soufrière backdrop — the active volcano to the north dominates the skyline from the upper valley.
Walk the farming valley — explore the terraced gardens and river paths around the village for an unhurried taste of rural windward Saint Vincent.
River bathing — cool off in the village's freshwater streams and pools.
Hike to Colonarie Falls and forest reserve — the neighbouring valley's waterfalls and forest trails are within easy reach for a half-day walk with a guide.
Use it as a quiet base — for exploring the windward coast and the southern approaches to La Soufrière.

Ask on WhatsAppWhere to eat?
Food is home-style and local, drawn straight from the surrounding farms: roasted breadfruit and fried jackfish (the national dish), callaloo soup, saltfish, stewed chicken or pork, and "provisions" (dasheen, yam, green banana, plantain). Meals come from cook shops, rum shops and roadside vendors rather than restaurants, with weekend roadside barbecue (pork and chicken) on Friday and Saturday nights in the wider area. Vegetarians manage well thanks to the abundance of provisions, breadfruit and callaloo, though dishes are often cooked with saltfish or meat — ask first. For more restaurant choice, head to Kingstown.
Where to drink?
The village rum shop is the social hub, pouring Vincentian rum and locally brewed Hairoun beer alongside soft drinks such as Bitter Lemon and fruit-cocktail sodas. Fresh fruit juices and coconut water are available from local vendors. Tap water is often locally collected (including rainwater) and quality varies, so bottled water is the safe choice, especially in the rainy season.

What should you buy?
South Rivers is a farming village with only small shops and rum shops selling everyday goods, fresh produce and snacks — there is no souvenir or craft shopping. Stock up on water and supplies here or in nearby Colonarie before heading into the hills. For markets, crafts and full groceries, Kingstown is about 45–55 minutes south. Shop prices are fixed; produce at informal stalls may allow light bargaining.
