The City of Kigali is Rwanda's capital and most populous city, situated in the geographical centre of the country on a series of rolling hills. Kigali is consistently ranked as one of Africa's cleanest and safest cities, with a booming economy, a growing food scene, and a palpable sense of forward momentum. The city is built around a central business district, with residential and commercial areas spreading across the surrounding hills — Kacyiru, Kimihurura, Remera, and Nyarutarama among them.
Kigali is the starting point for virtually every Rwanda itinerary. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is a must-visit, and the city's restaurants, craft markets, and cultural venues offer plenty to occupy a day or two before heading into the national parks.
When is the best time to visit?
The city can be visited year-round. The dry seasons (June–September and December–February) are most comfortable for walking tours. The short rains (October–November) bring afternoon showers but do not seriously disrupt travel.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
Kigali is spread across hills, so walking long distances is tiring. Motorcycle-taxis (motos) are the most common way to get around — short rides cost 300–500 RWF. Car hires with drivers are affordable for a full day. Bus routes connect the main neighbourhoods. Ride-hailing apps like SafeMotos and Yegomoto operate in the city.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Kigali has the most diverse food scene in Rwanda. Beyond local staples like brochettes and ugali, the city offers Indian, Ethiopian, Italian, Chinese, and Middle Eastern restaurants. Boutique coffee shops have sprung up in Kimihurura and Remera. The nightlife is lively, with bars, clubs, and live music venues concentrated in the Kacyiru and Remera areas.
What is the culture like?
The annual KigaliUp Music Festival (August) and the Rwanda Film Festival bring cultural events to the city. The Inema Arts Centre and Ivuka Arts Studio showcase contemporary Rwandan art. The Kigali Genocide Memorial hosts educational programmes year-round.
