Sretensk

Zabaykal'skiy kray, Russia

Why visit Sretensk?

Sretensk is a small town on the Shilka River in the central part of Zabaykal'skiy kray, approximately 280 kilometres northeast of Chita. With a population of roughly 7,000, it is one of the quieter settlements in the region. The town sits in a river valley surrounded by forested hills and taiga, at approximately 550 metres elevation.

Founded in 1689 as a fort, Sretensk has a long history tied to the Nerchinsk mining region. The town served as a supply point for silver and gold mining operations in the surrounding hills, and its name (meaning "Meeting" in Russian) refers to the confluence of rivers near the original fort site. The mining heritage has faded, and Sretensk today is a quiet agricultural and administrative centre.

The climate is continental with warm summers (average highs around 24 degrees Celsius) and cold winters (average lows around minus 30 degrees Celsius). The town is small and peaceful, offering a glimpse of rural Transbaikal life away from the main tourist routes.
