Erzin

Tyva, Respublika, Russia

Why visit Erzin?

Erzin is a small town in the far south of the Tyva Republic, located in the Erzinsky District near the Mongolian border. With a population of approximately 8,000, it is one of the more significant settlements in southern Tyva and serves as the primary gateway to the Ubsunur Hollow, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that straddles the Russian-Mongolian border.

The town sits in a river valley surrounded by steppe and semi-desert landscapes, giving it a distinct character from the greener central and northern parts of Tyva. The climate is extremely continental, with hot summers (temperatures can exceed 35°C) and cold, dry winters. The best time to visit is June through September.

Erzin's proximity to both the Ubsunur Hollow and the Mongolian border makes it a strategically important town for travellers exploring the southern Tuvan steppe. It has basic services including a market, a few hotels, and local transport connections.
