Kasimov

Ryazanskaya oblast', Russia

Why visit Kasimov?

Kasimov is a historic town in Ryazanskaya oblast', situated on the right bank of the Oka River approximately 130 km northeast of Ryazan city. Founded in the 15th century as a Tatar stronghold, the town has a rich multicultural heritage reflecting centuries of Russian and Tatar coexistence. With a population of around 30,000, Kasimov retains a quiet, old-world atmosphere with well-preserved merchant houses, churches, and stone buildings lining its streets.

The town served as an important trading post on the Oka River, and its architecture reflects this mercantile past. Kasimov is also known for its connection to the legendary Tatar ruler Kasim Khan, after whom the town is named. The surrounding landscape is characterised by river bluffs, mixed forests, and agricultural fields typical of the Oka basin.

Climate matches the broader central Russian pattern: cold winters with temperatures dropping below −10°C and warm summers averaging 18–25°C. The best time to visit is May through September when the town's riverside setting is most appealing.
