Why visit Gorodets?
Gorodets is a picturesque Volga town of approximately 30,000 people located 60 km northeast of Nizhny Novgorod along the Volga River. Founded in the 12th century, Gorodets is one of the oldest towns in the region and is renowned for Gorodets painting — a vibrant folk art tradition featuring bold floral and animal motifs in black, red, and gold, recognized by UNESCO as part of Russia's intangible cultural heritage.
The town occupies a scenic hilltop position above the Volga, with a charming historic center featuring traditional wooden houses, ornate window frames (nalichniki), and several churches. The Gorodets painting tradition dates back centuries and remains a living craft — visitors can watch artisans at work and purchase authentic Gorodets-painted items directly from workshops. The town also has a tradition of gingerbread (pryaniki) making and horsemanship.
Gorodets is one of the most popular day trips from Nizhny Novgorod, offering an authentic glimpse of traditional Volga town life and the chance to experience one of Russia's most recognizable folk art traditions in its place of origin.
