Why visit Klin?

Klin is a small ancient town in North Moscow Oblast, located 85 kilometres northwest of Moscow. Best known as the residence of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, whose house-museum is open to visitors, Klin is where the composer wrote his last major work, the 6th symphony, known as the "Pathetique." The town has been mentioned in Russian chronicles since the 1190s, with patriarch Nikon describing it in 1317.

Historians believe the site was originally a Baltic tribe settlement that grew into a wooden fortress of Novgorodians on the bank of the Sestra (Sister) River. The town survived the Mongol invasion and Ivan the Terrible's Oprichnina, and was incorporated into Muscovy in 1482 with the rest of the Grand Princedom of Tver. Town status was granted in 1781. Peter I prescribed the residents of Klin to serve as coachmen on the road between Moscow and Saint Petersburg, which is why the town's coat of arms features a post horseman tooting a horn.

Klin has two dozen churches, the most noteworthy being the 16th-century church of the Dormition cloister and the baroque Resurrection Cathedral (1712). The Tchaikovsky House-Museum, founded in 1894, is the main tourist attraction and a pilgrimage site for music lovers.

The town experiences the continental climate typical of the Moscow region, with cold winters and warm summers. The best time to visit is May through September.
