Yukhnov
Kaluzhskaya oblast', Russia
Why visit Yukhnov?
Yukhnov is a small historic town of approximately 10,000 people in the western part of Kaluga Oblast, situated on the Ugra River about 90 km from Kaluga. The town played a role in the 1812 Patriotic War, when Russian forces under Mikhail Kutuzov used the Ugra River crossings in their strategic manoeuvres against Napoleon's advancing army. Yukhnov's history stretches back to at least the 16th century, and the town retains a quiet, provincial character with wooden houses, churches, and the forested landscapes of western Kaluga Oblast.
The climate is continental with cold winters and warm summers. The surrounding landscape is heavily forested, with mixed birch and pine woods extending in every direction. The Ugra River valley provides scenic walking and fishing opportunities. The best visiting period is May through September.
The town centre clusters around a central square and the Ugra River embankment. The surrounding area is characterised by deep forests, river valleys, and small agricultural villages.
