Why visit Chemal?
Chemal is a small village of about 3,600 people in the Altai Republic, situated on the right bank of the Katun River at the confluence with the Chemal River. Set in a relatively wide valley surrounded by spurs of the Iolgo ridge, it is one of the Republic's primary recreational centres. Two distinctive peaks — Krestovaya (1,336 m) and Camel (928 m) — overlook the village, giving it a dramatic mountain backdrop.
In the 1930s, during the Soviet era, a resort was established here for Communist Party leaders and their families. An anti-tuberculosis sanatorium, state farm, bakery, and bath house were built, establishing Chemal's identity as a mountain climatic resort. Today it remains a popular destination for both domestic Russian tourists and independent travellers, with a large concentration of tourist centres, campgrounds, and holiday lodges.
The climate is cooler than Gorno-Altaysk due to the higher elevation and river valley setting, with summer highs of 22–26°C and cold winters. The village lies approximately 100 km south of Gorno-Altaysk along the Chuysky Trakt, making it one of the first major stops on the scenic highway.

By Plane
The nearest airport is Gorno-Altaisk Airport (IATA: RGK), approximately 100 km north. From there, buses or taxis continue south along the Chuysky Trakt to Chemal.
By Car / Road
Chemal is approximately 100 km south of Gorno-Altaysk along the Chuysky Trakt (M52), a drive of about 2–3 hours depending on road conditions. Several buses per day depart from Gorno-Altaisk, and buses also run from Barnaul and Novosibirsk via Ust-Sema. The road is partially paved and generally in fair condition, though winter closures can occur on mountain passes.
Chemal is small enough to explore entirely on foot. Local buses operate between Chemal and neighbouring Elekmonar. For day trips into the surrounding mountains, 4x4 vehicles or hired transport from Gorno-Altaisk are recommended.
What are the things to do?
Patmos Island — a picturesque rock island in the middle of the Katun River, downstream from the Chemal River mouth. The women's skete of John the Theologian of the Barnaul Znamensky Monastery stands on the island, connected to the bank by a pedestrian suspension bridge. An image of the Virgin and Child is carved into the rock beside the temple, and an old chapel (Ionno Bogoslavski) is also present.
Chemal Hydroelectric Power Station — one of the first hydro plants in the region, built between 1931 and 1935 by prisoners of the Siberian Administration of Special Purpose Camps. After a 2014 flood caused significant damage, the station was decommissioned and the reservoir emptied. The dam is now a museum, with souvenir stalls and cafés in its vicinity.
Altai Centre — created by the aga-zaisan (traditional leader) of the Altai people, Alexander Kindyshevich Bardin. Exhibits cover the history, beliefs, and daily life of the Altaians.
Varota Sartikpayev Gorge — a beautiful natural gorge with zip-lining and other adventure activities available.
Altaysky Tsentr Museum — ethnographic museum focusing on Altai culture and traditions.
River swimming and fishing — the Katun and Chemal rivers offer opportunities for swimming in summer and angling.
Horseback riding — guided horse treks through the surrounding valleys and mountain trails.
Day trips — Chemal serves as a base for exploring nearby Onguday, the Chuysky Trakt viewpoints, and mountain passes.
