Why visit?

Brăila County lies in southeastern Romania on the Danube River, about 170 km from the river's mouth. The county seat, Brăila city, is one of Romania's largest river ports and has a long history as a Danube trading hub; its old town includes the ruins of the Brăila Fortress (first documented in 1368) and the Maria Filotti Theatre, which once hosted performers such as Sarah Bernhardt and George Enescu. The Small Island of Brăila (Insula Mică a Brăilei), a protected wetland area on the Danube, is compared to the nearby Danube Delta for its birdlife and boating.
