Why visit Miedzyrzec Podlaski?

Międzyrzec Podlaski (Latin: Meserici, Yiddish: מעזריטש Mezritsh) is a town of about 17,000 people in eastern Poland's Lubelskie region, on the Krzna River near the Belarusian border. First mentioned in 1434, it grew as a trading centre on the merchant route from Łuków to Brześć. For centuries a crossroads of Polish, Jewish, and Ruthenian cultures, the town's Jewish community once made up 75% of its population (roughly 12,000 people) before the Holocaust. Today Międzyrzec is a quiet industrial and service hub with a modest historic core, a handful of churches, and a leafy riverside setting.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest major airport is Warsaw Chopin Airport (WAW), about 140 km northwest. From WAW, take a train to Warsaw Centralna then onward to Międzyrzec (about 2.5 hours total). Lublin Airport (LUZ) is about 110 km south. A taxi from Lublin costs roughly 250–350 zł.

By Train

Międzyrzec Podlaski has a railway station on the Warsaw–Terespol line, with regular connections to Warsaw (about 2 hours), Lublin, and Biała Podlaska. Trains are operated by PKP Intercity and Polregio. Tickets can be booked online at intercity.pl or at the station.

By Car / Road

The town lies at the intersection of national roads DK2 (the main east–west route from Warsaw to the Belarus border) and DK19. By car from Warsaw (about 140 km, 1.5 hours) take the S2 expressway east then DK2. From Lublin (about 110 km, 1.5 hours) take DK19 north. A 6.6 km bypass (opened 2008) allows north–south traffic on DK19 to avoid the town centre.

The town centre is compact and walkable. Local buses connect the outskirts and nearby villages. Taxis are available but can be hailed by phone. There is no ride-hailing app presence to speak of. A bicycle is a practical option for exploring the surrounding gmina.
