Herrera, Panama

Why visit Pese?

Pesé is a small town on the Azuero Peninsula, seat of Pesé District in Herrera Province, with a population of around 2,600 at the 2010 census. It is best known as the home of Varela Hermanos, founded in 1908 by Spanish immigrant José Varela Blanco, whose Ingenio San Isidro sugar mill was Panama's first. Since 1950 the family distillery in Pesé has produced Seco Herrerano, a clear sugarcane spirit widely regarded as Panama's national drink. The distillery remains the town's defining landmark and its main link to visitors beyond the immediate area.
