Al Bureij

Deir El Balah, Palestine

Why visit Al Bureij?

Al Bureij is a Palestinian refugee camp in the Deir El Balah Governorate of the Gaza Strip, established in 1949 for refugees from the areas of Jaffa, Lydda, and Ramla. With a population of about 40,000 within a compact 0.5 km² area, it is one of the most densely populated camps in Gaza. Al Bureij has a strong agricultural heritage — before 1948, the area was known for its citrus groves — and some small-scale farming still takes place on the camp's eastern edges. The camp has a lively market street, a community library, and a reputation for grassroots activism and cultural events. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, humid summers and mild, rainy winters. The camp's alleyways are navigable only on foot or by bicycle.

How do you get there?

By Car / Road

Al Bureij lies on the main Salah al-Din Road (Route 4), about 6 km south of Nuseirat and 4 km north of Deir El Balah city. Driving time from Gaza City is roughly 25 minutes. Shared taxis and minibuses connect Al Bureij to other Gaza Strip cities.

Al Bureij is small enough to walk across in 20 minutes. The main street is a pedestrian thoroughfare of shops and food stalls. Bicycles and donkey carts are ubiquitous. Shared taxis on Salah al-Din Road provide connections to Nuseirat, Deir El Balah, and Gaza City.

What are the things to do?

  • Al Bureij Market — The camp's main commercial street, busy from early morning with fresh produce, spice stalls, and fabric shops.

  • Al Bureij Mosque — The central mosque is a simple building that serves as a community focal point.

  • Al Bureij Public Library — A small community library run by local volunteers, a hub for educational and cultural activities.

  • Agricultural fields (east) — The eastern fringe of the camp gives way to small greenhouses and olive groves, offering a stark contrast to the urban density.

  • Walk the market — The morning market (07:00–12:00) is the most vibrant time, with the widest selection of goods.

  • Visit the community library — The library hosts reading programmes for children and sometimes holds cultural events.

  • Tour the agricultural edge — Walk east from the camp's main street to see the transition from camp to farmland.

  • Bird watching — The nearby agricultural fields attract migrating birds in spring and autumn.
