Rois

Rois is a small hamlet on the western side of Angaur Island, facing the open Pacific. It is the island's westernmost settlement, with a handful of homes set back from a coastline exposed to the trade-wind swell. The area around Rois is barren in places, a legacy of the phosphate mining that stripped much of the island's topsoil in the early 1900s, but the coastal views are dramatic and the surf breaks off the western shore are the best on the island.

Rois has no services and is visited primarily by surfers and anglers.

By Plane

Angaur Airstrip is 4 km northeast (30 minutes on foot).

By Car / Road

A sandy track runs from Angaur village across the island's interior to Rois, about 3 km. A bicycle is the best transport.

Walk or cycle. The western coast is rugged and requires sturdy footwear.

• Western coast views — dramatic open-ocean vistas and a rugged shoreline shaped by trade-wind swells.

• Surf breaks — the well-known Angaur Left and other reef breaks are accessible from Rois.

• Surfing — the primary reason to visit Rois; bring your own board as none are available on the island.

• Fishing — the western shore offers good shore fishing for trevally and reef fish.

No restaurants. Meals in Angaur village.

Bring bottled water from Koror.

No accommodation. Angaur Guesthouse is 3 km east.

No shops.
