Why visit Moss?
Moss is a coastal port city located in Østfold county along the eastern shore of the Oslofjord, approximately 60 km (37 mi) south of Oslo. Long defined by its paper manufacturing, glassworks, and iron foundries, the city has transformed its 19th-century industrial mills into a cultural district centered around the Mossefossen waterfall. Moss played a pivotal role in Norwegian history as the location where the 1814 Convention of Moss was signed, establishing Norway's personal union with Sweden while preserving its independent constitution.
Travelers visit Moss to explore the island of Jeløy, known for its 19th-century timber manors, art galleries, and coastal nature reserves, as well as the nearby freshwater lake Vansjø, which offers kayaking and forest camping. The city serves as a major transit node on the Oslofjord, carrying vehicle and passenger traffic via the Bastø Fosen ferry line to Horten on the western bank.
The climate is temperate maritime. Summers (June to August) bring long daylight hours and average daily maximums of 18°C to 22°C (64°F to 72°F). Winters (December to February) are cold and dark, with regular snowfall and temperatures fluctuating between -5°C and 2°C (23°F to 36°F). Spring and autumn bring variable rainfall, brisk winds off the fjord, and day temperatures between 7°C and 14°C (45°F to 57°F).
