Viken is a large county in southeastern Norway that wraps around the capital Oslo, encompassing the former counties of Akershus, Østfold, and Buskerud. The county stretches from the Oslofjord coastline in the south and east to the high mountain plateau of Hardangervidda in the west, creating a diverse landscape of fjord towns, fertile lowlands, boreal forests, and alpine ski terrain. This is the most densely populated region of Norway outside the capital itself, with a mix of urban commuter towns, historic market centres, and vast stretches of countryside.
The Østfold coast along the Oslofjord features sheltered harbours, rocky skerries, and some of Norway's warmest summer waters. Moving inland, the landscape rises through the Buskerud valleys toward the Hallingdal and the mountain villages of Geilo, Hemsedal, and Ål, where the terrain transitions to high-altitude plateaus and ski resorts. The Drammen River valley and the Romerike plain form the agricultural and industrial heartland, while the Glomma river, Norway's longest, flows through Fredrikstad and Sarpsborg to the sea.
Viken's proximity to Oslo means that much of the county functions as the capital's greater metropolitan area, yet it retains distinct identities. The Østfold towns of Fredrikstad and Halden have strong traditions tied to the timber trade and fortress history. Hallingdal in the west maintains a vibrant folk culture with Hardanger fiddle music and traditional bunad costumes. The county's position as a bridge between Oslo and the rest of Norway makes it both a transit corridor and a destination in its own right.
When to Visit
The best time to visit Viken is from May through September, when the lowland areas enjoy warm temperatures (18–25°C) and long days. The Oslofjord coast from Drøbak to Fredrikstad is at its finest in June and July, with swimming, sailing, and island-hopping at their peak. The mountain areas around Geilo and Hemsedal are excellent for summer hiking from late June to early September, with wildflower meadows and clear mountain air.
Winter transforms the western mountains into prime skiing territory. Geilo and Hemsedal are two of Norway's most popular ski resorts, operating from November through April. The Hallingdal valley in winter offers cross-country skiing, dog sledding, and the quiet beauty of snow-covered birch forests. Christmas markets in Fredrikstad's old town and Kongsberg are atmospheric seasonal draws. Autumn brings colourful foliage to the lowlands and is ideal for visiting the Østfold coastal towns when summer crowds have thinned.

WhatsAppGetting Around
Viken is the most accessible county in Norway. Oslo is the central hub, from which commuter and regional rail lines radiate outward. The Østfold Line connects Oslo to Moss, Fredrikstad, and Sarpsborg (approximately 1 hour to Fredrikstad). The Drammen Line serves Drammen and Hokksund, while the Bergen Railway runs through Hønefoss and onward to Geilo and western Norway. The Kongsvinger Line heads east to Lillestrøm and Kongsvinger. The Gardermoen Line connects Lillestrøm to Oslo Airport Gardermoen.
The E6 highway runs north–south through the county from Oslo toward Sweden, passing through Moss and Sarpsborg. The E18 connects Oslo to Drammen and the Vestfold coast. The E134 and Route 7 cross the county east–west toward western Norway, passing through Hallingdal. Regional buses connect the mountain towns; NOR-WAY Bussekspress operates long-distance services from Oslo to Geilo and Hemsedal. Sandvika, just west of Oslo, is a major road junction. Car rental is convenient for exploring the inland valleys and the Østfold coast at your own pace.

WhatsAppCuisine
Viken's food traditions reflect its position between the coast, the farming lowlands, and the mountain interior. Along the Østfold coast, fresh seafood including shrimp, mackerel, and herring are staples. The Glomma river valley produces grain, dairy, and meat from the fertile agricultural lowlands. Drammen was historically Norway's timber capital and its riverside restaurants now serve modern Scandinavian cuisine alongside traditional dishes.
In Hallingdal, the cuisine is rooted in mountain farming: cured meats (fenalår, morrpølse), brown cheese, flatbrød, and hearty stews. Geilo and Hemsedal have developed their restaurant scenes to match their ski resort status, with both fine dining and traditional mountain lodge fare. Kongsberg is known for its silver mining heritage and local game dishes. The Østfold towns feature traditional Norwegian home cooking alongside growing international food scenes driven by the region's diverse population.
Culture & Festivals
Viken has a rich cultural heritage spanning Viking history, fortress warfare, and folk traditions. The Borre burial mounds near Horten are among Northern Europe's most important Viking Age sites. Fredrikstad's Gamlebyen is the best-preserved star fortress in Scandinavia. Hallingdal maintains some of Norway's strongest folk music traditions, centred on the Hardanger fiddle and the halling dance.
Major festivals include the Kongsberg Jazz Festival (early July), one of Norway's most respected jazz events. The Hemsedal Mountain Festival celebrates outdoor culture with guided hikes and concerts. Fredrikstad hosts the St. Hans Midsummer celebrations with bonfires along the Glomma. The Ål Folk Music Festival (July) showcases Hardanger fiddle playing and traditional dance. Geilo hosts a classical music festival in the mountain setting each summer. The Østfold towns hold various kulturdager and maritime festivals throughout the year.
