Why visit?

Oslo is Norway's capital, situated at the head of the Oslofjord on the country's southern coast. Surrounded by the forested hills of Marka, the municipality covers 454 square kilometers, with over two-thirds of that area comprising protected woods, public parks, and waterways. The central districts border the fjord, where contemporary waterfront developments stand opposite an archipelago of small islands.

Travelers visit Oslo for its concentrated selection of national museums, striking waterfront architecture, and immediate access to outdoor recreation. Within short rides on public transit, visitors can transition from viewing original Edvard Munch paintings or 9th-century Viking artifacts to hiking forest paths or swimming in the fjord. The city runs on clean public transport, electric vehicle networks, and accessible harbor promenades like Aker Brygge and Bjørvika.

Atlantic weather systems keep conditions milder than typical for 59°N latitude. Summer brings warm, clear weather with daylight stretching up to 18.5 hours in June. Winter brings freezing temperatures, regular snowfall in surrounding hills, and brief 6-hour daylight windows near the winter solstice.

When is the best time to visit?

  • June to August (Summer): Primary season for outdoor activities. Daytime temperatures average 18°C to 23°C (64°F to 73°F), with warm spells occasionally reaching 25°C (77°F). Fjord water temperatures reach 17–19°C (63–66°F). June 21 brings nearly 19 hours of daylight.
  • September to November (Autumn): Temperatures decrease from 15°C (59°F) in September to 3°C (37°F) in November. Rainfall peaks in October and November. Autumn leaves peak in late September across the Marka forests.
  • December to February (Winter): Cold, snowy conditions with daily averages between -5°C and 2°C (23°F to 36°F). Daylight decreases to roughly 6 hours in late December. Snow covers surrounding hills, opening cross-country and downhill ski trails from January through March.
  • March to May (Spring): Snow thaws during April, with temperatures rising from 4°C (39°F) in March to 16°C (61°F) by late May. May 17 is National Constitution Day (Syttende Mai), marked by street parades and traditional folk attire.
