Fauske
Nordland, Norway
Why visit Fauske?
Fauske sits along the inner waters of Skjerstad Fjord in Nordland county, roughly 55 km east of Bodø and just north of the Arctic Circle. The town developed as an industrial and administrative center anchored by mining operations in nearby Sulitjelma and the quarrying of distinctive pink Norwegian Rose marble, which was exported internationally for buildings including the United Nations General Assembly hall in New York.
Today, Fauske functions as an essential junction in northern Norway's transport network. It marks the northern terminus of the electrified Nordlandsbanen railway line from Trondheim; passengers continuing north toward Narvik, Tromsø, or the Lofoten archipelago transfer here from trains to regional express buses. Beyond its role as a transit node, the town provides direct access to the rugged wilderness of Rago and Sjunkhatten national parks.
The local climate is subarctic and tempered by maritime air masses from the Norwegian Sea. Winters are cold, snowy, and dark, with temperatures averaging between -6°C and -1°C (21°F–30°F). Summers are cool and mild, with daytime highs typically ranging from 12°C to 18°C (54°F–64°F) under continuous daylight.
