Why visit Molde?

Molde is the administrative centre of Møre og Romsdal county, situated on the north shore of the Moldefjord in Western Norway. Known locally as the City of Roses due to its summer public rose gardens, the town sits on a south-facing hillside overlooking a vista of 222 partially snow-capped mountain peaks across the Romsdalsfjord. Cruise ships have docked in Molde since 1882, with 40 to 50 ships calling at the harbour each summer.

In April 1940, German air raids destroyed most of the town during the Norwegian Campaign. King Haakon VII and Crown Prince Olav took shelter under a local birch tree before escaping aboard a British cruiser along with the national gold reserves. Molde was subsequently rebuilt in a simple post-war architectural style, anchored by the 1957 Molde Cathedral. Modern Molde functions as a commercial hub for maritime shipping, offshore petroleum services, and higher education. The town supports Molde FK, a top-tier Norwegian football club in the Eliteserien league, alongside cultural institutions including the Romsdal Museum and the annual Molde International Jazz Festival.

The climate is maritime with high rainfall throughout the year. Summers are cool, with July daytime temperatures averaging 15°C to 18°C (59°F–64°F). Winters are wet and overcast, with January temperatures averaging 0°C to 2°C (32°F–36°F). Snow covers the higher surrounding terrain from November through April, providing a ski season in Moldemarka from December to March. Waterproof clothing is necessary during any month.
