Buguma

Buguma is a town on the Degema Creek in Rivers State, the traditional capital of the Kalabari Kingdom — one of the oldest and most influential Ijaw states of the Niger Delta. The town is located on an island in the mangrove swamp and is accessible only by water. Buguma is a centre of Kalabari culture, with a strong tradition of fishing, boat building, and masquerade festivals.

By speedboat from Port Harcourt — about 45 minutes via the Degema Creek. Boats depart from the Port Harcourt waterfront.

Walking is the main mode within Buguma town. Boats for trips to neighbouring creek communities.

The Kalabari Kingdom Royal Palace is the seat of the Amayanabo (traditional ruler). The Buguma waterfront and stilted houses are characteristic Delta architecture. The weekly market is a lively affair.

Fresh seafood from the creeks — prawns, crab, and fish. Pepper Soup and Banga Soup are local staples.

Palm wine is widely available. Bottled drinks should be brought from Port Harcourt.

There are a few small guesthouses in Buguma. Most visitors day-trip from Port Harcourt.

The Buguma market sells fresh fish, smoked fish, and local crafts.
