It sits on the A2 highway and preserves historic town walls. The area is predominantly Hausa and its economy centers on farming (groundnuts, sorghum, onions, millet) and livestock rearing, alongside textile weaving, ceramics, and leatherwork; the town is also home to the Audu Bako College of Agriculture and the Kano State School of Basic Midwifery.
