Arochukwu

Abia, Nigeria

Why visit Arochukwu?

Arochukwu is a historic town in Abia State, best known as the spiritual and commercial headquarters of the pre-colonial Aro Confederacy, a powerful trading network that dominated southeastern Nigeria and parts of Cameroon from the 17th to early 20th centuries. The town's defining attraction is the Arochukwu Long Juju Slave Route — a network of caves, tunnels, and the sacred Iyi Okwu River used as an oracle and slave-trading centre. The Aro people were known as middlemen in the slave and palm oil trades. The annual Arochukwu Day draws the Aro diaspora.
