Diffa

Diffa is the easternmost region of Niger, located in the Lake Chad basin. The regional capital is Diffa. The area is semi-arid Sahel, with the waters of Lake Chad supporting fishing and agriculture. However, the region has been devastated by the Boko Haram insurgency, with frequent attacks, displacement of populations, and a severe humanitarian crisis. Travel is extremely dangerous and strongly advised against by all governments.

The cooler dry season (November–February). Security situation should be assessed before any travel.

Travel requires security escorts. Roads are poor. Most of the region is inaccessible due to the security situation.

• Bosso: A town on the shores of Lake Chad, heavily affected by conflict.
• Chetimari: A settlement south-east of Diffa.
• Gueskerou: A town in southern Diffa.
• Goudoumaria: A settlement in the west of the region.
• Kablewa: A town in the central area.
• Maine-Soroa: A town in the west of the region.
• N'Gourti: A remote settlement in the far north-east.
• N'Guelbely: A village on the Lake Chad shore.
• N'guigmi: A historic town on the shores of Lake Chad.
• Toumour: A settlement on the Nigerian border.
• Termit National Nature Reserve: A protected area in the northern part of the region, now very insecure.

Fish from Lake Chad is a local speciality, along with millet and sorghum.

The Kanuri and Hausa peoples are the main ethnic groups. The area around Lake Chad has a distinctive fishing culture.

Travel to Diffa is not recommended for tourism. The region is experiencing a severe humanitarian and security crisis.
