Overview

Agadez is the largest region in Niger, covering the entire northern half of the country, deep in the Sahara Desert. It is the land of the Tuareg people, the Aïr Mountains, and the Ténéré Desert — one of the most remote and spectacular desert regions on Earth. The regional capital is Agadez, the historic Tuareg caravan city and a Unesco World Heritage site. The region contains the Aïr and Ténéré Natural Reserves, a Unesco World Heritage Site of extraordinary desert landscapes, rock art, and unique wildlife. Security is extremely poor, with terrorist groups active in parts of the region.

When to Visit

The cool season (November–February) is the only viable time, with daytime temperatures in the 30s°C. The rest of the year is brutally hot, exceeding 45°C.

The Tuareg (Kel Tamasheq) people are the region's iconic inhabitants. The Cure Salée festival in In-Gall (September–October) is the most famous cultural event, with Tuareg and Wodaabe gatherings.
